Forex Tester alternatives for manual backtesting

Prices and features last verified 2026-09-08. We include our own product in this list and say where it is not the right answer.

Forex Tester is the long-standing desktop answer to manual backtesting, with tick-level data and a deep historical archive. If you want to test offline against tick data, it remains a serious tool.

Traders move for three reasons: the one-off cost plus data packs, wanting to work in a browser across machines, and wanting the practice to produce a journal rather than a session that ends.

What Forex Tester does well

  • •Tick-level data and a very deep historical archive.
  • •Works offline once installed, with no dependence on a connection.
  • •A one-off licence rather than a subscription.

If those are the things you need, staying put is a reasonable decision. The rest of this page is for the cases where they are not.

Why people look for an alternative

You want it in the browser

Desktop software ties you to one machine. Web tools trade some data depth for working anywhere.

You trade more than forex

Check crypto, indices and futures coverage and how far back each goes.

You want practice and journaling in one place

Look for replay sessions that write into the same analytics as your live trades.

The alternatives

1.Secuoraour product

A trading journal and a bar-by-bar replay backtester in one web app. Price is revealed one candle at a time, orders and costs are modelled, and every replay trade lands in the same journal and analytics as a live one.

Best for
Traders who want deliberate practice on historical data and an honest record of it, across crypto, forex, stocks, indices, futures and metals.
Price
Pro $29/mo, or $23/mo billed yearly. 3-day free trial, card required. Free replay demo with no account.

2.FX Replay

A focused manual bar-replay platform on TradingView-powered charts, with a blind-testing mode that hides the date to remove hindsight.

Discretionary forex traders who want replay practice and nothing else in the way.

Questions

Is there a free Forex Tester alternative?

TradingView bar replay is included with paid TradingView plans and limited on the free tier, and Secuora runs a free replay demo on real BTC data with no account. Genuinely free tick-level desktop testing is rare, because the data itself costs money.

Do I need tick data to backtest properly?

It depends on your timeframe. Scalping strategies that live inside the spread need tick accuracy. If your entries are on 5-minute candles or higher, 1-minute data with realistic costs applied is normally close enough to be decision-useful.

What is the difference between Forex Tester and bar replay tools?

They do the same core job, revealing history one bar at a time. The difference is deployment and scope: Forex Tester is desktop software focused on forex with tick data, while browser tools cover more asset classes and increasingly attach a journal to the practice.

Try the replay before you decide

Secuora’s replay simulator runs on real BTC data in the browser with no account and no card, so you can judge it against this list yourself.
